Is your confidence in a coma?

“I was shouting, but no one could hear me.”

I came across this quote recently from this amazing and tragic news story about a Belgian man, Rom Houben, who was presumed to be in a coma for 23 years after being paralysed in a car crash.

New brain scanning techniques were used by doctors to discover that man had normal brain function, but could not speak. Rom now communicates with a special keyboard.

This story scared me a little.

And it also got me thinking.

I wonder if there are times your unconscious mind is screaming at you, but you aren’t – or don’t want to – listen. And if there were things your unconscious mind was dying to tell you, what would those be?

The reason I ask is that often my clients come to see me not when they just want to boost their confidence in public speaking, at work or in relationships (though they do), but when something has ‘gone wrong’ in their mind or body.

The ‘gone wrong’ thing is sometimes insomnia, sometimes panic attacks, sometimes nerves, sometimes OCD, sometimes muscle twitches, sometimes addictions. Sometimes strange things like my client who had a compulsion to pick a hole in their foot when they were stressed.

See there’s two ways to see all these mental and physical symptoms – one is that the body has ‘gone wrong’ and needs fixing like you’d fix a broken exhaust pipe on a car. The other way, is that the symptom is the unconscious mind screaming out for you to notice that something in your being is not in balance.

Sometimes to get re-balanced you want to change your eating habits, your socialising (that’s my polite way of saying ‘your booze, prostitute and crack habit’). Other times you want to learn how to de-stress, let go of thoughts that are torturing you, of feelings that make you feel shit, or to build up reserves of self-esteem, self-worth and confidence.

So if you’re reading this and something in your thinking or body isn’t working for you, let me ask you, if your symptom was your being shouting for you to pay attention, are you going to listen?

After all, if you don’t listen, you’re never going to hear the message…
